The exiled Foroyaa Newspaper Reporter Yahya Dampha, arrived in United States Tuesday, accompanied by his wife and twin kids, the Freedom Newspaper can authoritatively report. Mr. Dampha who narrowly escape state sponsored abduction in Dakar was quickly moved to Ghana, thanks to the support of the Media Foundation For West Africa. Mr. Dampha and his family are currently residing in New York City, said our source.
Amnesty International researchers Tania Bernath and Ayodele Ameen, and Yahya Dampha were arrested in Fototo by agents of The Gambian Government amidst allegations of spying, a charge Amnesty denied.
Mr. Dampha told the BBC Focus On Africa shortly after their release that “they were arrested in the town of Fatoto, some 250km (155 miles) from the capital, Banjul, where they had gone to meet Ousman Jatta, a key member of the Gambian opposition who has been in detention for 13 months.”
"Our delegates were on a public and official visit to investigate the human rights situation in The Gambia and The Gambian authorities had been informed of their visit," said Erwin van der Borght, director of AI's Africa programme.
"It is completely unacceptable for any government to attempt to impede the work of human rights workers," he said.
Dampha is now running for his life. He fears persecution if he returns to The Gambia.
