….Sir Dawda Pays Tribute to Dibba
The death of former Gambian Vice President and Speaker Sheriff Mustapha Dibba has been announced. Mr. Dibba who was diagnosed with heart attack, suffered brutal torture during the March 2006, abortive coup led by Colonel Ndure Cham. Dibba’s ailing health got worsen, since the said torture meted out to him by the late Major Musa Jammeh and his partners in crime.
Former Gambian President Sir Dawda Kairaba Jawara was among the thousands of mourners yesterday. Mr. Dibba was laid to rest yesterday. Sir Dawda gave a personate speech at the burial, where he describes Dibba as a fundamental pillar to Gambia’s pre and post independence. The former statesman describes the demise of Sheriff Dibba as a big loss to The Gambia and her people.
Sir Dawda describes the late Sheriff Dibba as a true patriot who played a crucial role in Gambia’s economic and political development. Jawara made reference to the old days, in which he says Dibba always put national interest ahead of personal interest.
Yahya Jammeh who was pretending to be crying, also describes the late speaker as an asset to The Gambian nation. He has been accused of causing the death of the late speaker by ordering Musa Jammeh and co to torture Dibba. Jammeh was speechless yesterday. There was sign of guilt on his face.
Numerous speakers expressed shock over Dibba's demise. They prayed for his eternal rest.
Sheriff Dibba who died at the age of 71, was the leader of the National Convention Party (NCP). Mr. Dibba served as Vice President under the First Republic. He also serve as Finance Minister under Jawara’s watch. He later formed his own political party. He contested for the Presidency on numerous occasions without winning.
His party and the Ruling APRC reached merger some years ago, which led to his appointment as Speaker of the National Assembly. He was fired from his Speaker job for unexplained reasons.
Shortly after his removal, Sheriff’s troubles with the Ruling Government started. He was arrested in March of 2006, accused of treason. Even though, Mr. Dibba had denied having knowledge about the said coup, he was held for days without the right to legal recourse.
Military sources say the late Sheriff Dibba suffered untold torture from the hands of the state agents led by the late Musa Jammeh. “ The old man was physically tortured by Musa Jammeh and his group. He fainted at some point during the torture sessions. He was tortured alongside with Ramzia Diab, Musa Dibba, Lie Kujabi, Foday Barry and others.” Said military sources. Our sources said some of the tortured former detainees would likely not make it because of the severity of the torture they suffered.
