Africa has largely failed since independence!!!Michael Scales Writes!!
Dear Mr.Editor,
It becomes apparent that Africa has largely failed since Independence to embrace democracy in any other form, other than in name only. How many times have we seen an elected democratic government fail to embrace the cherish principal of "one man one vote".The list of African tyrants come dictators that have been lifted as the chosen champion of democracy, by a trusting people, bares as an indelable witness to this statement. The cloak of democracy has been the mantle of the hidden agenda of those few who used democracy as a cover for opportunism and unmittigated and ruthless power.I was touched with sadness, on watching the news on the BBC last night ,at the sight of Nelson Mandela almost choking on the short but powerful words he spoke on Zimbabwe. His comment....".the tragic failure of leadership "said it all.The question remains, what happens to Africans once they become President.?From a distance they appear to go mad.!!!
Why do they missuse the military and the Judicial system, to further their thirst for power. Why do they torture, kill and mame their own defencless citizens? with impunity.
Is Africa aware of how many children are locked in prisons in Zimbabwe.?Their can be no more precious asset to the human race than children.Yet in almost every African country, they are sold and bartered and missused as collateral or swopped for a handful of coins. The mental traumer of Africa's children endures into adulthood for those fortunate to make it that far against all the odds.

I recall on my first visit to The Gambia.April 9th 2000, to be precise,I wrote in my journal
" I have just attended the local methodist church in the capital City of Banjul this Sunday morning.I sat for two hours on a hard wooden bench which was most uncomfortable.I was shocked at the openness and honesty of the lady lay preacher who for two solid hours,
time and time again chastised the congregation on the practice of incest amongst families in The Gambia.I must confess I admired her courage to engage such a sensitive issue with such strength and purpose. In deed I was left shocked and traumatised. On leaving the church, I quickly lit a cigarette and followed my guide past the open sewers in the street, which were crawling with mosquitoes and extremly large flys and insects. The stench was appauling and made me feel sick in my stomach. Please God let me leave this place and never come back "
The Freedom Newspaper, took my statement of the 10th April 2000,when I saw a boy in a clean white school shirt, being bludgeoned to death by soldiers on the back of an open lorry. His blood splattered the windscreen of my yellow taxi.
It is therefore most remarkable that this whiteman was to return a further 19 times to The Gambia, and to date have recieved some 25 death threats for my trouble.

Mr Editor,Britain, my country, has moved a million miles to outlaw slavery and create a Multi racial/cultural, tolerent society that stands in Law against any predjudice against colour of skin, racism,or predjudice against minorities. Britain has been a major player in the 1998 Human Rights legislation, which protects the rights of all citizens nomatter of their race colour or creed ,religion or indeed sexual preference.Their are many words, or actions spoken or given to offence which are banned from use, under strict penalties for the abuser. But nomatter what Laws are created,it still requires the diligence of every member of society and the Judiciary to protect these cherished rights religiously.Britain also, was instrumental in convincing the leaders of the G8 sumit at Gleneagles, towards cancelling the debt of African governments,in order to give breathing space to their embattered economies. The Hard pressed British taxpayer and citizen gives a higher percentage of income to Africa than any other nation except the United States of America. Is it not therefore justified for Britain and the International community  to take the moral highground in Zimbabwe and Africa as a whole to condemn those African governments who continue to cling to power under the disguise of democracy.Does the British democratic tax payer have the right to hold African government to account for their waste of human resources and abuse of power.I say they do.May I offer support to the bravery of those African leaders who have supported the right of the people of Zimbabwe to a true and fair democracy.Thankyou to the Freedom Newspaper, for this space and towards interupting your busy day.
                                                                                         I remain... Michael..U.K.
