Latest information coming from the State House in Banjul says President Yahya Jammeh ordered for the possible extermination of the Point Newspaper Editor Momodou Justice Darboe. The President who relied on an intelligence report, which linked the Point Editor with the Freedom Newspaper, was reported to have asked his jungullars to kill the Point Reporter. Mr. Jammeh has been displeased with the recent Freedom Newspaper news stories and editorials to a point that he ordered for an enquiry to trace and kill a Point Newspaper reporter, who was accused of passing information to the US based online paper. “ Fatou Jahumpa Ceesay told the President that it was Justice Darboe who files report for the Freedom Newspaper. She also informed the NIA and the police. Few days before the failed assassination attempt, Mr. Darboe’s home in Wellingara was surveyed by personnel of the State Guards. Malick Jatta, Sanna Manjang and one MFDC fighter, who is embedded in our midst was among those who went to survey Justice Darboe’s home. The initial plan was to abduct him from the Point junction, but after a second thought, the President said he does not want any sign of traces on this planned assassination. The main plan was to cut his throat, but things never worked out as planned. I witnessed the Presidential briefings that evening. The President said he wanted to set another drastic example. Justice Darboe happens to be one the names of journalists forwarded to him by the Speaker and Alhagie Mbye, who according to our intelligence is currently out of the country. The President was very mad, when our men reported to him that the operation had failed. He still insists that the mission should be accomplished come what may. But one of the jungullars said he recognizes one of the neighbors, who chased him and was worried that his cover would be blown.” Said an official of the State House.
The heavily built attacker, who had military shoes with him at the time of planned assassination, chased the Point Editor up to his bath room , with the sole objective of killing him. He made numerous attempts to slaughter the Point Editor, but thanks to the intervention of some benevolent neighbors, the plot was foiled.
According to authoritative sources at the State House in Banjul, The Gambian leader Yahya Jammeh wanted to see Editor Darboe dead because he was made to believe that it was Justice Darboe who files most of the critical stories to the Freedom Newspaper.
“ The President gave orders for his killing. I know what I am talking about. I work with the intelligence and I have been privy to a lot of classified information about the Point Newspaper and the Freedom Newspaper. Justice Darboe needs to leave the country or otherwise, he risked being killed. The President was complaining when our men reported to him that the plot failed. He still insists that our men should go ahead and accomplish the mission. That’s is to kill Justice Darboe. There is also another foreign journalist, who is being watched by the State. There are nasty schemes reached against some journalists in the country.” warns the official.
Speaking to the Freedom Newspaper yesterday, Justice Darboe said his attacker held him by his neck and tried to slaughter him. “ His plans were to slaughter and dump me in the streets. I have lodged a complaint with the Wellegara police. I am currently nursing the wounds I sustained from the failed assassination attempt. Bro, I have to quit the Newspaper business. My life is no longer safe in this country.” Said Justice Darboe.
The Point Newspaper co proprietor Pap Saine was said to have been worried by the latest developments. Darboe was interviewed by his colleagues at the Point and he told them his side of the story.
According to informed sources, the police never obtained any statement from Darboe because by doing so they might be targeted by the President. “ It’s clear that this was a state sponsored assassination. No case file has been opened to investigate the case of Justice Darboe. Darboe made a verbal complaint, but his statement was never recorded. The police also never visited the scene of the crime. No witnesses were interviewed by the police. His case was just downplayed. This is the situation we are living in this country.” Said the official.
Prior to the assassination attempt, Justice Darboe was invited by the Speaker Fatou Jahumpa Ceesay at her residence, where she complained about the Point Newspaper Editorials, in which the President was criticized for his failure to acquire the ECOWAS chairmanship. In that article the author highlighted the President’s democratic shortcomings, insinuating that this could be a possibility for Jammeh’s disqualification. The Speaker also accuses Darboe of working for the Freedom Newspaper. She warns Darboe to disassociate himself from the Freedom Newspaper, if he wants to live long.
“ Justice Darboe, you have to be very, very careful. You are a young man. You see what happened to Deyda Hydara. You can be killed and nothing would come out of it. You are an intelligent young man and you have a long way to go.” Speaker Fatou Jahumpa Ceesay was quoted as saying.
She was speaking in the presence of a former soldier, who was implicated in the March coup and now discharged from the army. The soldier lived in Dippa-kunda, just around the Senegambia garage.
The soldier in question is a good friend of the speaker. “ The speaker invited a soldier, implicated in the March coup in her house together with Justice Darboe. This was shortly after the March coup. The Speaker never minces her feelings about the plot hatched to harm Darboe. She told Darboe that he and Alhagie Mbye got to be very careful because the state had received information that they were supplying information to the Freedom Newspaper. The soldier also told Darboe to be careful because the speaker’s concerns were legitimate.” Said our source.
