Editorial:The Gambia Becoming A Death Trap Nation!!!!

The Gambia is increasingly becoming a death trap nation. Barely a week passes without reports of an automobile accident. Innocent people are dying,  thanks to Jammeh’s misplaced economic priorities. Major roads across the country are in deplorable conditions. The Government lacked funds to repair the battered roads.

Many blamed the accidents to over speeding, but the reality is that bad roads also aggravated the problem. In the absence of good roads, there is bound to be accidents. The Government should be blamed for the loss of lives. It is the duty of the Government to ensure that there are safe, and reliable road network across the country.

The Jammeh Government is cheap. It is not committed to constructing high classic  roads for Gambians.  They construct low class roads, and pocket the rest of the project’s money into their pockets.

You will be surprised to learn that such road projects cost  Government millions of dalasi, but at the end of day, few thousands are spent to service such projects. The Kanifing Municipality (KMC) in particular  is reputed to be pocketing such road funds. They are good at drafting project proposals, but hardly live up to expectations.  Almost all the roads in the Greater Banjul Area in complete mess.

In view of the recent increase on road accidents, no one is safe in this country, including Yahya Jammeh, the world acclaimed thief. He might as well be a victim of road accident, if the situation is not redressed.

With all the bluffs made by this Government, there have not been any meaningful development recorded so far. The Gambia is the most backward country in Africa. We are yet to realize the much talked about change Jammeh, and his cronies promised our people.

Take a visit to neighboring Senegal, and see the amount of development registered by the Wade Government. Despite the economic challenges befalling the former French colony, there have been  a significant achievement recorded in the area of socio economic development. There are good roads, healthcare, and quality education in Senegal.

It is embarrassing to indentify oneself as a Gambian, in view of the underdevelopment initiated by the Jammeh Government. Many countries look  low upon us, thanks to Jammeh’s recklessness, and lack of leadership direction.

With all the hospitals built by this Government, Gambians still traveled to Dakar, and elsewhere across the world to seek for better medical treatment. Our hospitals lacked drugs, and qualified personnel to attend to patients.

The problem can largely be attributed to poor pay, and lack of incentives. There have been a massive attrition of Gambian nurses overseas. This was corroborated by Dr. Tamsir Mbowe during an interview with the Freedom Newspaper.

On a final note, we call on the Jammeh Government to resign since it is unable to live up to the expectations of the citizenry. We cannot afford to see more Gambians dying due to road related accidents. This is unacceptable.
