Following days of behind bars, the disgraced Executive Director of Gambia’s National Drug Enforcement Agency (NDEA’S), Ebrima Bun Sanneh has been released from state custody, the Freedom Newspaper can report. Mr. Sanneh was released on Monday, but was asked to report to the offices of the National Intelligence Agency, sources reaching this paper said. Mr. Sanneh was spotted at the NIA premises, accompanied by a relative of his, who posted a bond on his behalf—to facilitate Sanneh’s partial freedom—pending the outcome of the graft allegations brought against him by the state.
Bun Sanneh was fired alongside with two other top officials of the country’s anti narcotic bureau—over allegations of financial impropriety, corruption, and abuse of office. They were also accused of “socializing” and as well as aiding, and abetting Gambia’s drug lords. The detainees denied the charges, but notwithstanding, they have had their services terminated prematurely.
An official of Gambia’s spy agency, the (NIA) confirmed that Mr. Sanneh was booked Tuesday morning, as he (Sanneh) was instructed to report to the Agency, a day after his release. The official said no charges have so far been filed against Mr. Sanneh, adding that “the investigations are still ongoing”
The NIA official would not comment as to whether Mr. Sanneh is being investigated on alleged drug trafficking allegations, but he did indicates that Bun Sanneh, and co have “betrayed the confidence” bestowed on them by the Head of State. The official said once the investigations are complete, Gambians would be informed accordingly in regards to the said case.
Mr. Sanneh was seen driving his personal vehicle yesterday. He spends some time at the NIA Marina Parade offices, before he was asked to go home. Sources said Sanneh has been asked to report to the agency on set dates—pending the completion of the investigations of his case.
Meanwhile, former police Chief Essa Badjie is still languishing in jail. He is yet to be released by the state. Mr. Badjie was reported to have lamented about his continued detention without trial. He wants the state to either charge, or release him.
Mr. Badjie who appeared confident openly brags about his innocence. He was quoted as saying that he is willing to face the courts, if the state deems it imperative to file charges against him.
