Dictator Jammeh Says He Will Never Help President Macky Sall And His Government To End The Casamance Rebellion!

Dictator Jammeh Says He Will Never Help President Macky Sall And His Government To End The Casamance Rebellion!

By Pa Nderry M’Bai

If President Macky Sall of Senegal is hoping to have any future relationship with his Gambian counterpart Yaya Jammeh, especially in the area of  helping to end the Casamance crisis, President Sall should not waste his time banking on Gambia’s support; he should just forget it, dictator Yaya Jammeh has told the Senegalese TMF television station during an interview. Mr. Jammeh’s latest resentment against Macky Sall and his government stem out from Senegal’s refusal to turn in fleeing coup suspects from the Gambia,  Gambia government officials and Gambian political dissidents, who are using Senegal as their temporal home for now.

Mr. Jammeh, speaking in the local Wollof dialect, said the Macky Sall government should not expect him to help them end the Casamance crisis since in his own words “Senegal is harboring my enemies, who are plotting to kill me.”  Jammeh said Senegal under the leadership of  former President Abdoulie Wade and Macky Sall has become a  safe haven for Gambian dissidents accused of coup plot, murder, theft, and subversive activities. He said he has repeatedly protested to the Senegalese authorities to stop harboring and aiding people plotting to destabilize his government, but it seems to him that Senegal is after his downfall. Jammeh noted that given the proximity of the two countries, and its porous borders, it is against international laws for Senegal to grant political asylum to Gambians accused of coup.

“They think that I am a fool. How do they expect me to help them end the rebellion in Casamance, when they are harboring my enemies in Senegal.  I have unequivocally told them (the Senegalese government) that since they are harboring Gambians accused of coup, murder, theft, and subversive activities, we will not help them solve the Casamance crisis. Senegal has adopted a policy of harboring and encouraging Gambian dissidents to insult me on their soil and in some occasions, they  threatened to take my life… People accused of murder, coup, theft and so forth are fleeing to Senegal… The Senegalese government never turns in such folks and yet they expect me to help them end the Casamance crisis. Our new policy is to withdraw from taking part in any Casamance peace talks… We will not inflame, or arm the rebels.. But Senegal should not expect us to help them in anyway..,” Jammeh said.

Mr. Jammeh, claiming that he is not a hypocrite, also talked about Senegal issuing travel documents to the late Koukoie Samba Sanyang. He said Koukoie’s mother is his aunty. He alleged that Senegal have allowed Koukoie to use their country over the years to destabilize the Gambia—even to the point of granting him Senegalese citizenship. Jammeh said Senegal’s conduct is unacceptable, and it is not in line with the principles of democracy.

Mr. Jammeh uses the interview to reflect on his previous peace deal missions he reached with Koukoie.  He said he has invited Koukoie and his group in Kanilai with the sole objective of trying to encourage Koukoie to return home. He said he has made it categorically clear to Koukoie that he has no problem with him and was free to return home as a senior citizen. He added that the Jawara regime Koukoie had problem with was history, and that there was no point for the late revolutionary brother to live in exile. He said he has in the past warned Koukoie that any attempt on his part to destabilize his government will cost him his life.

Yaya Jammeh later shifted his conversation with the Senegalese reporter to Senegal’s hostility against the Gambia as a nation. He said Senegal has been very hostile against the Gambian business community, even though there are 750,000 Senegalese using the Gambia as their economic basket. According to Jammeh, Senegalese border agents have been harassing Gambians , who used their roads to transport goods to Mali.

“Our people are experiencing problems, when it comes to transporting goods to Mail, even in Senegal. Senegal has beefed up security along the border. We treat their nationals here with respect. No one harasses them. In fact, there are 750,000 Senegalese in the Gambia. They are into business, petty trading, and almost all sectors of the economy,” Jammeh lamented adding that his government will no longer condone Senegal’s diplomatic double standards.

Mr. Jammeh added that Senegalese custom agents will not allow people to take sugar for personal consumption from the Gambia to Senegal, when Senegalese are bringing all kinds of goods into Banjul. He said the time has come for his regime to revisit its bilateral ties with Senegal.

“A one way diplomacy will not work….Senegal wants to use the Gambia for their economic basket and yet they are hostile against our people. You go to the  Banjul market, and elsewhere around the country, it is dominated by Senegalese. There are more than 750,000 Senegalese in the Gambia. You go to market “Sandaga” in Senegal; you will not find a single Gambian. If I tell you that the relationship between the Gambia and Senegal is smooth I am lying. Senegal is the only beneficiary between the Gambia/Senegal relationship,” Jammeh said.

Dictator Jammeh also blamed the former Senegalese President Wade for kicking him out from the Casamance rebellion peace talks. He said he has once warned Wade to stop aiding Gambian dissidents to destabilize the Gambia. Jammeh bragged that he told Wade that Senegal was going to live to regret it if it ever attempts to under Gambia’s much cherished peace. He signals that he was determined at the time to go to war with Senegal if Wade had not put his acts together.
