MPS Say  The Press Is Causing Fear In The Country

Members of  Gambia's law making body, have raised concern over recent reports on the press regarding the proposed increments on the cost of national identification documents and the 5 percent tax levy on imported rice. The country's 2010 budget which was recently announced saw an almost 100 percent increase on the cost of passport, road tax and licenses as well as a 5 percent tax levy on imported rice – developments that seems to have caused a rare division, even among members of the ruling government. Press reports on the debate – both print and electronic, according to NAMs, are not balanced and objective as reports were cantered on only those who spoke against, while the views of those who spoke in favour were never featured. The majority leader of the National Assembly and member for Serre Kunda East, Fabakary Tombong Jatta, who launched the attack, quoted a recent newspaper article: 'NAMs Mourn Increment On National Documents'.

Bad Blood Between The Army And The Paramilitary (PIU)

Reports reaching this paper reveal that for the past couple of months there has been bad blood between two units of the Gambian security, precisely the military and Police Intervention Unit (PIU). According to our sources, the antagonism has been going on for months among the Army and the PIU. They alleged that members from the two units frequently clash at functions when they meet. A senior PIU officer told this paper that the hatred between the two result from the soldiers, whose men, he alleged, are fond of assaulting their men while on duty. He said the situation went up to a stage when they resolved to fighting back.

Senegal's president, Abdoulie Wade, is once again embroiled in another round of controversy after a provocative remark he made, annoying the country's Christian Community.
