“The current opposition party leaders should give way for the selection of a candidate who should be put up as an independent candidate. The presidential candidate should belong to all parties, all ethnic groups without any gender barriers. It is would be the duty of the current political leaders to storm the terrain and handover the candidate to the people. He/she becomes the candidate of the people and we will put him/her up as the choice of the Gambian people. History is full of people uniting to save themselves. Russia, America, Great Britain, France and others became allies because they have a common enemy in the person of Adolf Hitler. This is a historical lesson and the Gambians today should unite for their survival,” a statement issued by Gambia’s opposition National Democratic Action Movement (NDAM) read.  The statement which was forwarded to the Freedom Newspaper by one Karanlang Jaiteh also lamented about Gambia’s appalling foreign policy. “Our foreign policy is in shambles, even Senegal our next door brothers are at a cross road with the Gambian government. THE NEED FOR OPPOSITION UNIFICATION BY MR.LAMIN WAA JUWARA

NEWS RELEASE 2

The Gambia is in disarray and is fragmented politically. Never in the history of this country has there been so many political parties. The differences between them ideologically are very small both ideologically and performance.

The Gambia as a whole is a small constituency with a few ethnic groups. The unity should be based on what obtains today. The origins of the ruling APRC party is coupe de etats against a democratically elected government whose credentials are peace, democracy and accountability.

Today, more than any time before, the opposition needs unity in other to restore democracy to the Gambia. Therefore the Gambians both at home and abroad are waiting for the desire to fulfill the noble ambition of unity. It is therefore incumbent on any political organization to work towards that attainment. Collectively we have tried as leaders of our different political parties to attain our personal ambitions, it is therefore prudent for us to work to restore to our country. The only way we can do that rationally is to unite to restore democracy to the Gambia.

The conditions of the APRC party and the independence electoral commission s to frustrate that ambition. They know fully well that the peaceful Gambian people are fed up of the dictatorship. The only road open to salvage the Gambia and restore multi party democracy s a defeat of the ruling APRC.

The conditions both in terms of deposits, registration fees of parties, extension of voting rights to Gambians abroad, the opening of bureaus, the age limit of presidential candidates, these are all unacceptable and undemocratic.

The opposition political parties need to unite urgently, select a presidential candidate in the interest of the Gambia which we all call our fatherland. This should be for a transitional period of two years to restore democracy to the Gambia. These two years should be accountable to democracy and restore democracy so that our fatherland becomes the pride of every Gambian.

The current opposition party leaders should give way for the selection of a candidate who should be put up as an independent candidate.

This is a historical lesson and the Gambians today should unite for their survival.

Our foreign policy is in shambles, even Senegal our next door brothers are at a cross road with the Gambian government. We have no friends with the permanent members of the United Nations, European Union, etc. term limit dictated by the ECOWAS countries is rejected by the Gambia government. During the first republic, Gambia’s foreign policy was friends of all and enemies of none.

Today despite our small size, and economic insignificance, we have hardly any friends across the world. Therefore it is urgent for us to unite and come terms with the rest of the world. Let us put up a single candidate for transition period of two years to restore democracy and allow all political parties to contest in an atmosphere of friendship and democracy.
