Barely a day after a 3-man Senegalese minsters led by the Minister of the Armed Forces , Mr. Augustine tine, dozens of trucks loaded with illegal logs destined for Gambia have been seized by the Senegalese Army in Ziguinchor on Saturday. The trucks with Gambian registration numbers are presently held at Diouloulou in the department of Bignona less than 30 kilometers from the Gambian border. Also a large number of donkey carts (charrettes) filled with logs have also been seized. It now seems that the war against illegal logging launched by the Government of Macky Sall have started to yield some fruits.
It will be recalled that the Senegalese Association against the illegal exploitation of timber and other forests product, Mr. Abdoulie SOW have seriously implicated Yaya Jammeh as having strong hands in the illegal timber trade in the Senegalese southern region where village heads and elders are given television sets, Jakarta motor-bicycles , watches and many gifts by agents of Chinese traders stationed in the Gambia around the borders with Casamance.
In a press statement on Saturday and reported by the BBC Focus on Africa, the Senegalese authorities announced their readiness to take all necessary measures to fight this dangerous trafficking responsible for the rapid depletion of its forest resources estimated about 10,000 hectares since 2010. Most of these illegal timber are finally exported to china with the Gambia earning significantly from this illegal trade.
With this seizure, the Senegalese authorities have decided to increase the resources in the southern region to eradicate this exploitation by agents of Yaya Jammeh. It remained to be sen what will be the reaction of the authorities in the Gambia over this serious allegation.
