Interior Permanent Secretary Momodou Nai Ceesay, has been dismissed with immediate effect, the Freedom Newspaper can reveal. Mr. Ceesay received his sacking letter yesterday. No reason was given for his sacking.
Mr. Nai Ceesay, who used to be the Chairman of the Refugee Commission, and a former UNDP staffer, was recycled into the Jammeh system two years ago. He got his marching orders yesterday.
Interior Ministry sources said Mr. Ceesay was a close confidant of the escaped former Interior Minister Ousman Sonko. It is not clear if his sacking has to do with his past close relationship with Mr. Sonko.
It would be recalled that Mr. Nai Ceesay has been instrumental in helping Yahya Jammeh to get refugees registered to vote in the coming polls. Thousands of non-Gambians have been issued with voters’ card to vote in the coming elections.
In another development, this medium has been reliably informed that government workers have been asked to turn in their voters’ card to the nearest region of their residence so that the serial numbers of their voters’ card can be recorded. The goal is to intimidate workers to vote for Jammeh.
Our sources on the ground are also reporting that thousands of civilians with no military, or police background are being recruited to wear uniforms so that they can vote on election day. The Independent Electoral Commission Chairman Alieu Mamar Njai, who earlier refused to register the ghost soldiers, later had to succumb to pressure from the State House to issue voters’ card to the soldiers, sources said.
“Contrary to an earlier impression that Mr. Njai refused to register the soldiers, it has come to our attention that he yielded to pressure from the State House to issue voters’ card to the soldiers. This, I can confirm to you,” said our source.
