In a press briefing yesterday, Gambia’s Army Chief of Defense Staff General Ousman Badjie, reaffirmed the army’s allegiance, and loyalty to president Adama Barrow. Mr. Badjie said the army will prove to the entire world that it’s loyal and professional.
“We members of the security services pledge our laoyalty and sincere allegiance to President Adama Barrow. We The Gambia Armed Forces under my command as we give former president Jammeh 100 percent allegiance and support, we will give President Barrow 150 percent support and allegiance and prove to the whole world that we are one of the best armed forces in the world. I swear to that we will do this,” Badjie told journalists here in Banjul.
The press conference was witnessed by Mr. Badjie’s assistants in the army. He called on the media to help reassure the world that the Gambia is a peaceful nation, and that calm has returned to Banjul.
“They should let the world know this and let those who fled come back and they will be protected more than before,” he said.
UNHCR is reporting that 4,5000 people have fled from the Gambia to Senegal, and 1,000 to Guinea Bissau. It also says more than 3,000 tourists have left the country and that hotels are virtually empty.
