Mr. Mbai,

Hope this email finds you in a great state of mind. I am alerting you on an issue of great national interest. It appears that the so-called honorable Mai Fatty is igniting a long standing dispute among the community of Nyakoi where he himself hailed from for his own personal political gain and for a grudge he possibly held against a certain section of the community.

To give you a little background, Nyakoi is located in the URR section of the Gambia a few miles north of Basse. It consists of Kerewan, Taibatou, Madinakoto, Sutukonding, all within less than a kilometer from each other. They are all related in one way or the other due to intermarriage. Taibatou was the last to settle in this area some 200 to 300 years ago allegedly by a King of Sandu. It goes without saying therefore that they have been given land to cultivate since then.

Since the 1970s to date, the people of Taibatou have been embarking on irrigated rice cultivation on a particular land area that has been a subject of dispute among the people of Madina, and Taibatou. But authorities of Jawara and Jammeh government have declared the people of Taibatou the rightful owners.

Currently, the people of Taibatou have been supported by the IFAD funded NEMA project to enhance the productivity of this land, to include other crops to enable year round production of diverse crops.

Recently, youths of Madina attacked the farm, destroy the facilities and water pumping equipment owned by the Taibatou community. This followed recent allegations in some quarters that the honorable Fatty promised the people of Madina that if his candidate in the area wins the national Assembly elections, he will make sure he will revert the ownership of the land to Madina.

To add insult to injury, the perpetrators of this crime has not been brought to justice yet. There has been reports of police activity, but no arrests were made.

Please investigate, we are tired of this nonsense meted out on the people of the hard working Taibatou. They work year round while the neighbors sit around and watch but only to cause them trouble when they reap the benefits of their sweat. And unscrupulous politicians like Fatty do not help the situation either.

The Alkalo of Taibatou can be reached on …..

Thank you for the good work you are doing

Concerned Taibatounian
