The Bafuloto youths, who were held for over a month without bail, have been released from police custody with immediate effect, the Freedom Newspaper can reveal. Lamin Demba, Alieu Faal, Alieu Touray, Bakary Manneh and co have been granted police bail. Bafuloto, village head Alhagie Jobe, and Imam Alhagie Ceesay, who were arrested on Friday, after showing up at the Brusubi police station to secure bail for the detainees, have also been release on bail. This followed, a Freedom Newspaper story on Friday, exposing the continued detention of the Bafuloto youths without bail.

An excited Bakary Demba, a resident of Bafuloto, phoned the Freedom Newspaper from Banjul few minutes ago, to relay the news of the release of the detainees. “ I am pleased to inform you that all the detained Bafuluto youths, have been released on bail. The village head Alhagie Jobe and the Imam Alhagie Ceesay, have also been release on bail. The police said they have received instructions for the accused persons to be released on bail.  All nine of them have been released on bail. We were required to provide a property transfer document as a condition for the detainees to be granted bail. All the detainees have been released from police custody at this time,” Mr. Demba told me.

“Earlier on, our lawyer Jainaba Sambou, was with us at the Brusubi police to secure bail for the accused persons. She has been running around all day trying to secure the release of the detainees. She played a crucial role towards their release. She later left us at the station after failed attempts to secure them bail. But luckily, before we disperse, the police told us that an instruction was been given for the accused persons to be granted bail. As I am, speaking to you, all the detainees are back home. They have reunited with their families,” said Mr. Demba.

Mr. Demba, thanked the Freedom Newspaper for granting them audience to be able to communicate their story to the authorities and the world at large.

“We are very grateful to the Freedom Newspaper. Thanks for exposing our story to the world. We are happy that the detainees have reunited with their families before the Eid celebrations,” he said.
