Gambia movement for Democracy and Development (GMDD) here by informed the General public that the protest that was scheduled to take place on June 27th, 2017 has been postponed until further notice. This is due to the progress that have been observed on the side of president Adama Barrow’s government in the recent past that initiated the call for a protest.
The protest was aimed to draw the attention of the international community and to pressurize the government for the following reasons:
(1) to investigate the killing of Haruna Jatta.
(2) to end the harassment of APRC supporters
(3) to release all the Kanilai village
(4) to appoint a Vice-president
According to a statement by ECOWAS on June 6th, 2017 a condolences to the family of Haruna Jatta was issued and an investigation to the incident was initiated.
As of today all those who were arrested and detained as a result of the Kanilai protest have been released.
Two people originally from the Foni District; Mr. Lang Tombong Tamba and Mr. Abdoulie Kujabie have since been engaged to coordinate a peaceful relation between government and the people of the area.
Finally the lack of appointment of a vice-president is a matter of concerned for many Gambians. We hope president Adama Barrow would take this matter seriously and address it once and for all. To that note an open letter would be send to the president and to be copy to the international community in the coming days to highlight the importance of appointing a Vice-president in order to address section 70 of the Constitution.
We thank you in advance for your understanding.
