“I am hopeful that the findings of the Commonwealth mission team will facilitate The Gambia re-joining the Commonwealth as soon as possible. The unilateral decision to withdraw the country from the organisation in 2013 was unfortunate and uncalled for,” president Adama Barrow said in a statement on his official Facebook page.

“The Gambia never wanted to leave; nobody wants to be isolated. We want to be part of all international bodies. This was one man’s decision and not something that was put to Gambians. If it had been a referendum, the decision would never have been taken,” Barrow added.

The Gambia has applied to be readmitted into the Commonwealth of nations. It membership would be reinstated into the global body once the Commonwealth mission team finalizes its findings.
