He was a former ruling APRC surrogate and Kanifing Councilor, now become a top Gambian diplomat in the United States. His name is Mustapha Sosseh. He goes with the name ‘MUSTAPA SOSSEH’ on Facebook. He is the new Deputy Chief of mission at the Gambian Embassy in Washington DC. He arrived in DC this morning on board a South African airline. He flew on economic class. He has never been to the US before.
Mr. Sosseh is a native of Farafenni. He briefly attended Muslim High school before venturing into the world of politics. He served as an APRC Ward Councilor for the Kanifing Municipality. He is a lovable guy in the Municipality; with a strong political followers, one of our sources said.
Sosseh recently defected to the United Democratic party (UDP), where he was adopted as a father by the party’s followers at his locality.
The UDP is headed by Ousainou Darboe, Gambia’s Foreign Minister. Many UDP supporters have been hired to serve in the Foreign Service since Mr. Darboe became Gambia’s Foreign Minister.
Sosseh’s appointment as Deputy Chief of mission at the Gambian Embassy in Washington DC, came as a surprise to many folks contacted by this medium. One of the people, we spoke to said Sosseh lacks what it takes to become a good diplomat. For example, he said he very much doubted if Sosseh is capable of writing a comprehensive Diplomatic Cable.
“He was accorded a massive sendoff party before his departure from Banjul. The party was held in Busumballa. I was there. I think he got the job through his association with the UDP,” our source said.
“The Mustapha Sosseh, I know, we called him Sosseh. We used to hang out at his home. He has been denied US visa on multiple occasions. He onetime resided next to the Bakoteh waste dumping site. He was married to a businesswoman, who used to frequent the United Kingdom. He later married a lady at Sinchu Baliya,” our source added.
A Freedom Newspaper research revealed that Mustapha Sosseh was Mayor Yankuba Colley’s errand boy. He was always in the company of Colley. Many even mistaken him as Colley’s driver, when in fact, he was a ward councilor.
Sosseh was also president Adama Barrow’s good friend prior to the president ascending to the presidency. He used to look out for the former Manjum real estate developer during his visits to the KMC, a source familiar with the story told this medium.
Sosseh was contacted via his cellular phone for comment, but he was indisposed at the time of going to press. His phone was on voicemail when we last contacted him.
When contacted for comment Mr. Saikou Ceesay Communication officer at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed the story.
“Yes, he has been appointed as Deputy Head of Mission of the Republic of The Gambia to Washington, USA, along with other Ambassadors. He’s just gone now,” Mr Saikou Ceesay, Communication officer at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Gambians Abroad has confirmed.
